Hearing Impaired

Hearing impairment department was established in the year 1996 with two children having profound and severe hearing impairment. Earlier program focused on teaching and extended gradually to assessment of hearing impairment. Early intervention program was started in 2000 with four children in the age group of 3 to 4 years. Team of teachers underwent special training for teaching the hearing impaired. In 2001, the school was struck with earthquake and the work was at stand still due to lack of infrastructure. With efforts of our Founder trustee Dr Shantu Patel, the early intervention work was restarted. The first child was integrated in 2003, following few others. At present, department has 53 students with mild to profound hearing loss. Children follow Gujarat State board curriculum till VIII standard and are sent to mainstream school thereafter. School teaching involves total communication approach. Besides regular school curriculum, children are encouraged to participate in various co-curricular activities like self defense, art and craft, mud art, music and dancing. Meditation is an integral part of school activities. Children learn mindfulness meditation technique based on ancient Indian practice. The future vision is to develop vocational training unit for hearing impaired children.
